Carlson Part-Time MBA Essay Analysis & Tips

Carlson Essay 1:

Your personal statement should address the following three questions

a. Briefly describe your short-term and long-term career goals. Why are you choosing to pursue an MBA at this time in your career and what are you hoping to accomplish by doing so?

b. Why are you interested in pursuing an MBA at the Carlson School of Management?

c. What do you feel makes you a strong candidate for the program? How will you contribute to the MBA Program overall?

Begin this essay by describing your current job profile, and then go on to write where you wish to see yourself in the immediate future, both in terms of function and position. Explain why you have chosen this as your goal and, unless you are planning to remain with your present company, mention few organizations that you would like to target. Thereafter, discuss your long-term career goal and the impact you hope to make by attaining it. Draw a logical and sequential connection between your career goals and the pursuit of your MBA. Your MBA should, naturally, serve as a bridge between what you are doing now and what you aspire to do in future.

The second part of the question requires you to familiarize yourself with the Carlson program through as many ways as you can, including reading its website, paying visits to the campus, and getting to know its students, alumni, and faculty. Even its location may be a significant factor. You will have to explain how exactly specific elements of the curriculum and its community life, as revealed through its co-curricular and/or club activities, align with the goals you have set for yourself. If you have friends in the school or among the alumni, what they have told you about the school can constitute a good reason why you have chosen to pursue your MBA at Carlson.

The third answer will flow logically from the second. Assuming you know the details of the program, you will also know where you can fit in, and how you can express and utilize your skills and experience to contribute to classroom discussions and community activities. You also contribute when you learn from others and engage in common activities with them, so you can also point out areas where you may not be particularly adept at the moment, but where you wish to open up new avenues for yourself by acquiring new skills through your participation.

The question does not specify any word-length for your essay. However, 750 words would be optimum for this essay.
